Sydney, Oct 6 (ANI): Ricky Ponting says he sidelined off-spinner Nathan Hauritz during the nail biting final stages of the Mohali Test against India, and gave chances to part timers Marcus North and Shane Watson instead, in a bid to do something different in his quest for victory.
Australia's main spinner Hauritz was placed on the third-man boundary line, with Ponting deciding to give his pacers the chance to wrap up the Indian innings, which they failed to do.
"Just trying something a bit different. I've had a bit of success in the past going to a part-timer, in the Sydney Test a few years ago Michael Clarke won the game for us there. I think when North bowled in the first innings he showed he was really in control of his game in terms of his spinning," Ponting said.
"Nathan, today, probably just leaked a few too many runs, at the stage where we needed to go back to spin today we couldn't really afford to leak any more runs so I thought North's control was good," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.
"Their batters had all had a good look at Hauritz through the game, I don't think many saw much of North, so it was more about rolling the dice there than anything else," he added.
Hauritz claimed 2-116 in the first innings and in the second took 1-45 from nine overs. (ANI)
