Cabbies of Mumbai oppose proposed makeover of their vehicle

Mumbai , Mon, 04 Oct 2010 ANI

Mumbai, Oct 4 (ANI): Taxi drivers of Mumbai on Sunday expressed their displeasure over the decision of the State government to change the colour of their taxies.

The drivers said the people can easily identify the iconic black and yellow colour of their Fiat taxis and the proposed change could affect their business.

Moreover the drivers have been asked to bear the cost of the makeover.

"We will protest. Our union is already protesting. The change of colour will add to the financial burden of the taxi drivers. We cannot bear the cost, if the government wants a change in colour then they should give us the money," said Vinod Kumar Mishra, a taxi driver.

K.K Tiwari, President of a Taxi Union called 'Swabhiman Mumbai', said that the government should implement the decision on the new fleet of vehicles to be introduced rather than forcing it on the already existing ones.

"Taxi drivers are already facing a lot of problems. I would request the Transport Department Commissioner to implement the decision for the new cars and not for the cars, which have been on the road for the last 25 years," he added.

In 2008, a Court had ordered the phasing out of taxis, which are over 25 years old.

The city has over 50,000 black and yellow taxies. (ANI)
