London, Oct 3(ANI): Former England spinner Derek Underwood reckons that Graeme Swann can overhaul his record of 297 Test wickets to be the most successful English spinner.
Swann's current haul is of 113 wickets from 24 Test, but he is an emerging player who has also been nominated by the International Cricket Council's (ICC) for this year's World Player of the Year award.
"He has got a touch of class and a touch of quality about him. He's the strike bowler in this attack, he's the one that has conjured up this element of danger for the batsman - he just comes on and takes wickets," The Daily Express quoted Underwood, as saying.
"I'm sure that my record will go some day because there's just so much more Test cricket played. He's still got a lot of work to do, but if England get runs on the board and put the opposition under pressure then he should certainly hurry along," he added.
The 65-year-old further insists that it would be interesting to see how the off-spinner fares against Australia during next month's Ashes.
"It will be interesting to see how he fares in Australia. Personally, I loved bowling in Australia, especially in Sydney where you always get a bit of assistance for the slow bowlers," Underwood said.
The first of the five Ashes Tests will be held at The Gabba in Brisbane from November 25 to 29.
It will be followed by Tests in Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.
The tour also has two Twenty20 clashes and a seven-match ODI series. (ANI)
