No 100 percent guarantee of security at CWG: Britain

New Delhi , Fri, 01 Oct 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Oct.1 (ANI): Britain, which has sent its largest ever oversees contingent of athletes to take part in New Delhi commonwealth Games, has expressed satisfaction over the facilities at the Games Village, which had been drawing criticism from number of participating nations.

According to diplomatic sources, the majority of the participating British athletes feel that the facility is as good as anywhere where the games have taken place in the past.

Britain, however, remains doubtful about the security being provided for the players at the Games venues.

"In open societies, there can be no 100 percent guarantee that a determined terrorist would not succeed with their plan," a British diplomat told ANI on condition of anonymity.

Commenting on security at the stadiums, British diplomatic sources said: "The British Government's view on this question is reflected in our official travel advice. We have no reason to think that the state of the venues is unsatisfactory. But it is the Commonwealth Games Federation that acts on our collective behalf on this issue."

Britian had issued a travel advisory after the attack on Taiwanese tourists at Jama Masjid.

The advisory said: "There is a high threat from terrorism throughout India. Terrorists have targeted places in the past which Westerners are known to visit, including public places such as restaurants, hotels, railway stations, markets and places of worship".

Britons were also told to be extra careful while traveling on public transport including buses, trains and the metro. Other than Britain, Australia has also issued similar warning to the participants.

Nearly 80,000 police officers, 3,000 commandos, 175 companies of paramilitary forces, 5,000 barricades, 3,000 CCTV cameras, 620 PCR vans and over 300 escort vehicles are deployed to provide security to the Games venue in Delhi. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)
