Oz issues fresh alert of "high risk of terrorist attack" during Delhi CWG

Canberra, Wed, 29 Sep 2010 ANI

Canberra, Sept 29 (ANI): The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs has released a fresh alert saying there is a "high risk of terrorist attack" at the Delhi Common Wealth Games, which are scheduled to start from October 3.

The department issued this alert after the media reported that leaked top secret police documents reveal two extremist groups are planning to attack the Commonwealth Games.

"Australians in New Delhi should be aware that the Commonwealth Games will be held in a security environment where there is a high risk of terrorism," the Herald Sun quoted the statement, as saying.

It further said that police had intercepted some phone tapping intelligence indicating the groups are targeting 'foreign teams and officials'.

"We continue to receive reporting that terrorists plan to attack public places, including hotels and tourist locations, in New Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities," the statement reads.

Earlier, the Defence Minister Stephen Smith had said that new warnings of planned terror attacks in India added nothing to what is already known.

"The preliminary assessment is that it doesn't add to anything that we already know. Our travel advice for India has for some time been that there is a high risk of terrorist attack," News.com .au quoted Smith, as saying.

He also stated that there had been extensive government consultation with Australian athletes and sporting associations and that the team had been provided with all the information they needed to make their own judgements. (ANI)
