New Delhi, Sep. 27 (ANI): Australian chef de mission Steve Moneghetti said he is happy with the facilities at the complex that would house 8,000 athletes during the event.

With only a week to go before the start of the competition, India officials were racing against time to address complaints about dirty and unhygienic facilities in the village.

Moneghetti sounded pleased after his inspection of the facilities at the village complex and said a final verdict would be given once all the Australian athletes arrive.

"I am finding it great and as I said the athletes are arriving so we will get some really good honest feed back from them but at this point of time, athletes are happy, if the athletes are happy, I am happy," said Moneghetti.

On Sunday, Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee officials met to review the work at the Games Village where masons plastered walls while workers dried out the basement of the Village which sits on the flooded plains of the Yamuna river.

South Africa's High Commissioner to India Harris Majeke told reporters a snake had been found in the room of an athlete at the Games village.

But Moneghetti said he was not too perturbed about snakes.

"I think we are ok from snake point of view. We Australians are used to dealing with some of the most venomous snakes in the world. So a couple of snakes will not be an issue for us. We do have medical staff tackling those unusual issues," said Moneghetti.

Most of the 34 apartment blocs are gleaming and spacious and fitted with Italian marble.

Over 20 teams had arrived in Delhi by Monday.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the Village, where 8,000 athletes from 71 nations will stay during the event, would be fully ready on Wednesday.

The Games are due to commence on October 3 and end on the 14th.

India is expecting about two million tourists in New Delhi for the Games, as well as about 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states. (ANI)
