Supreme Court issues notice to West Bengal Government in Nandigram firing case

New Delhi, Mon, 27 Sep 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Sep 27 (ANI): The Supreme Court issued a notice to the West Bengal Government on Monday seeking its response on a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) plea to proceed against the state police officials in the Nandigram firing case.

In the petition filed before the apex court, the CBI has asked for permission to conclude its probe into the March 2007 police firing in Nandigram in which fourteen persons were killed and over hundred others injured.

In its petition, the CBI cited the recent Supreme Court ruling that High Courts could order CBI probe into incidents without the consent of the State Governments.

The apex court permitted the investigating agency to continue with its probe on December 13, 2007, as per the orders of the Calcutta High Court, but had restrained it from filing its final report in the case.

The West Bengal Government had then challended the Calcutta High Court's order saying the Court cannot order a CBI probe without the consent of the State Government. (ANI)
