Another Pakistani athlete banned after testing positive for steroids

Islamabad, Tue, 21 Sep 2010 ANI

Islamabad, Sept 21 (ANI): In the latest incident in the doping saga plaguing Pakistani athletes, runner Sumaira Zahoor, who competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics in 1500 metres category, has been handed a two-year ban after she tested positive for steroids.

Sports ministry spokesman Faik Ali said that the 30-year-old Zahoor was suspended after appearing before a three-member committee of the national anti-doping body.

However, Zahoor could appeal against the ban, said Khalid Mehmood, one of the committee members.

It is noteworthy that Pakistan will not compete in any of the track and field event at next month's Commonwealth Games (CWG) in New Delhi.

Pakistan sports has recently been rocked by doping scandals, as cricket players- Shahid Afridi, Muhammad Yousuf, Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Akmal- underwent dope test last week, and just a few weeks back, the country's anti-doping agency banned ten female and male athletes for testing positive both in the National Championship and during a camp for the Commonwealth Games.
