Sydney, Sep 21(ANI): Less than a month before the start of a new cricket season in Australia, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is undergoing renovation, where workmen are using laser technology to produce the perfect playing area.
The process will remove bumps and hollows, refine the 360-degree camber, thereby improving drainage, and make life easier for bowlers who in the past have had an uphill run from the Randwick end.
It seems an impossible task to complete on time, but the curator, Tom Parker, remains remarkably relaxed.
"Things are going well. We should be ready in time," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Parker, as saying.
Since work began last week, almost 1000 tonnes of material have been removed from the site, and now a 15-man team is laying a new, 50-millimetre blanket of fertiliser, sand, soil and fresh couch grass.
Parker is also confident that the stadium would be ready to host New South Wales' opening one-day match against Tasmania on October 22.
The ground makeover would also benefit Australian football League team Sydney Swans who, according to football rules, require 30 millimetre grass, three times the depth used in cricket. (ANI)
