Melbourne, Sept.19 (ANI): National team captain and Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker has predicted that Australia will topple England in the track and field at next month's Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Hooker was competing with several of his Delhi-bound national teammates at the Great North City Games, where England defeated Australia 5-4 in the nine-event program.
"England had their day today but I am feeling confident we are going to be able to top them when it comes to Delhi," the Daily Telegraph quoted Hooker, as saying.
Australia collected 14 gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games to England's six and Hooker believed the 2010 team were up to matching those deeds from Melbourne.
"I think so, I think one of the features of Melbourne was the real breakthrough performances and I am sure we are going to have that again this year with a really talented young team," he said.
Australia will be missing the likes of Jana Rawlinson (injury), John Steffensen (withdrawal) and Craig Mottram (non-selection) in India while the English will be without heptahlon world champion Jessica Ennis (withdrawal) and middle distance runner Mo Farah (withdrawal). (ANI)
