India and United States seek to strengthen cooperation in agriculture, food security

New Delhi , Fri, 17 Sep 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Sep 17 (ANI): India and the United States have set-up three working groups for strategic cooperation in agriculture and food security, food processing, agriculture extension, farm-to-market linkages, and weather and crop forecasting respectively during the recent India-US Agriculture Dialogue held in New Delhi.

US Under Secretary of State for Energy, Economic and Agricultural Affairs Robert Hormats and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao co-chaired India-US Agriculture Dialogue held here on September 13 and 14.

The Working Groups also discussed proposals for cooperation and will finalize the specific initiatives and modalities for cooperation through mutual consultation.

Agricultural cooperation dates back to the early days of Indo-U.S. relations and the first green revolution.

In 2009, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh committed to taking practical steps to advance global food security and increase U.S.-India agricultural cooperation. (ANI)
