New Delhi, Sep.14 (ANI): The Indian Railways on Tuesday felicitated Sushil Kumar on becoming first Indian wrestler to win a Gold medal in the World Championship in Moscow in the 66 kilogram men's freestyle category.
Sushil is an officer in Northern Railway.
The Minister of State for Railways, K. H. Muniyappa in a function today handed over a cheque of Rs. 10 lakh as a Railway Sports Promotion Board's (RSPB) award and a memento to Sushil Kumar.
This RSPB award is in addition to a special Railway Minister's award of '10 lakh which was announced by the Union Minister for Railways, Mamata Banerjee on Monday. It will be given to Sushil Kumar later on.
Muniyappa, read out a message from Mamata Banerjee, calling Sushil Kumar's win as "historic and marvelous achievement" which made India and Indian Railways proud.
The text of the message of Mamata Banerjee is as under :
"My personal congratulations on becoming the World Champion. It is the spirit, drive and dedication like yours that leads to personal achievement and National glory. You met the challenge with determination, strength and total confidence. Congrats! Your victory is a 'victory for the Rail Pariwar and dedicated to the Nation'."
Interestingly, Mamata Banerjee also spoke to Sushil Kumar on mobile phone in the middle of the felicitation function and again congratulated him for his achievement.
Muniyappa said: "It is a great day for the sports fraternity of the Railway family which is now jeweled with another world champion in wrestling with Railway sportsman Shri Sushil Kumar winning gold in the World Championship 2010."
Congratulating Sushil Kumar for attaining a prominent place in the world of sports, Muniyappa said that Railways are proud and privileged to have Shri Sushil Kumar as a member of its large family. The Minister hoped that Shri Sushil Kumar would continue to bring laurels to the Railways and to the nation as a whole. (ANI)
