New Delhi, Thu, 09 Sep 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Sep 9 (ANI): The Delhi traffic police held trail of traffic management and diversion, directing commuters not to ply on lanes dedicated only for movement related to Commonwealth Games.

The trial, which will continue for two more days, will become operational from September 20.

Hundreds of traffic policemen were deployed in chosen parts of the city to direct the traffic to not to enter the lane painted blue at intervals.

The penalty for violators of this rule is 2000 rupees or impounding of the vehicles.

Addressing a press conference here, P K Tirupati, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said despite hurdles, all projects would be completed before the event.

"Deadlines have changed, I admit but if you see the ultimate deadline is that these projects to be completed before the games, that is being met. Individual deadlines have been flexible. Now if some deadline has passed we cannot stop work," he added.

India is expecting about two million tourists in New Delhi for the Games, as well as about 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games is India's biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games. (ANI)
