New York, Aug 30 (ANI): Women's tennis fans have slammed former World No. 1 professional tennis player John McEnroe for alleged "patronizing" comments about female athletes, where he said that female players lack the toughness of their male counterparts.
"That's silly... that's very patronizing. I'm surprised, especially hearing it from John." The New York Daily News quoted Karin Barnaby, a retired teacher from Long Island, as saying.
Other women at Saturday's qualifying matches for the U.S. Open in Queens agreed with her assessment.
Irene Bogdashevsky of Forest Hills, thought McEnroe was wrong and just trying to stir up some controversy ahead of the US Open Championship. I think he's doing it just to get a rise out of people. It's hard to imagine, with as many great women as he's seen play, that he would say that," she added.
In a reference to unidentified female tennis players who suffer "an actual meltdown on the court," McEnroe, a three-time U.S. Open champion who is now working as a tennis commentator, had earlier said: "You shouldn't push them to play more than they're capable of." (ANI)
