London, Aug 30 (ANI): Former head of the ICC's anti-corruption unit, Lord Condon, has said the crooked bookmakers are voracious people, adding that the sport must remain very vigilant about match fixing.
Lord Condon likened the bookmakers who get their hooks into players to paedophiles, reports Daily Express.
Condon, who spent a decade trying to crack the illegal betting rings that creep into the game, especially on the Indian subcontinent, stepped down from his post in May 2009.
He, however, issued a warning saying that the criminals would be all over the game like a rash, if cricket did not remain vigilant about match fixing.
"When we tried to get on top of the challenge we discovered we were dealing with very dangerous people, predatory people who look to groom young players when they first come on the scene - much like a paedophile looks to groom young children by gaining their trust - and present them with the opportunity of earning what they see as easy money," said Lord Condon.
"We are talking about dangerous, organised crime. I have come across allegations of players' families being kidnapped if they did not co-operate," he added.(ANI)
