London, Aug 25 (ANI): A study has revealed that more women are now cheering their favourite Premier League teams, with nearly a fifth of all fans being female.
"More are children and from ethnic minorities. The research by Populus showed 13.6 million fans attended Premier League games in the 2008/9 season," reports Daily Star.
During the research, it was found that out of the nineteen percent female fans cheering for their respective league teams, eight percent were black or from an ethnic minority.
Moreover, it is speculated that a less macho atmosphere and higher safety standards would have inspired women to turn up in large numbers.
"Football is increasingly attractive to more sectors of society. It was only a generation ago that people used to see it as a rather narrow preserve for young, white males," The Daily Star quoted Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore as saying. (ANI)
