Manager Hoddle was right to axe me from France 98: Gazza

London, Mon, 23 Aug 2010 ANI

London, Aug.23 (ANI): Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne a.k.a. Gazza has admitted that coach Glenn Hoddle was right to drop him from England's World Cup squad in France 98.

In the furore that followed, Hoddle came under fire, but Gazza now admits: " I had a situation with my ex-wife so credit to Hoddle. Even though I had my rows with him, he -probably made the right decision."he former Newcastle and Spurs star, in an interview with Sky Sports News, said England's 2010 squad also hit trouble before they set out for South Africa.

He said: "I thought our squad was going to be OK this time, but we had outside problems with John Terry.

"Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand were injured and Wayne Rooney might have been carrying a slight injury, so it didn't look good from the start.

"I don't know Fabio Capello that well and I know he's a good manager, but I don't know if the players mixed that well. In 1990 we played tennis, table tennis - we had a laugh and joke. We sneaked out now and again, maybe that's not the right thing to do now. We all made friends and I was just interested in enjoying as much of it as I could while I was a young kid," The Sun quoted Gazza, as saying.

Gazza's 1990 campaign famously ended in tears in the dramatic semi-final shoot-out defeat by Germany. (ANI)
