Vizag Zoo now has substantial rock python population

Visakhapatnam , Mon, 16 Aug 2010 ANI

Visakhapatnam, Aug 16 (ANI): The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam now has eleven rare rock pythons to boast about.

The substantial increase in the python population is due to a female python giving birth to six baby pythons.

"They (baby pythons) have been shifted to the hospital. All young pythons, they came out successfully and now we are raising them in hospital and after that they will be released back to the enclosure," said Srinivas, a doctor of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park.

The 35-day-old pythons measure nearly four feet in length. The zoo at present has five adult pythons.

Zoo officials, wildlife enthusiasts, and visitors expressed delight with the development, which has given a boost to the threatened species.

Earlier, Zoo officials had removed the eggs from the snake enclosure and placed it in a specially designed incubation box to protect them from being snatched by birds or damaged by the mother python's own weight. By Basi Reddy(ANI)
