Parliament adjourned twice over farmer deaths

New Delhi, Aug 16 (ANI): Both houses of Parliament were repeatedly adjourned on Monday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) protested the killing of two farmers in police firing in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura District.

 

The Lok Sabha was first adjourned till noon. But the pandemonium continued when the lower house met again and opposition members moved towards Speaker Meira Kumar's podium and raised the issue, shouting slogans against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government.

 

Kumar then adjourned the house till 2 p.m.

 

Rajya Sabha was also been adjourned till 2 pm on the same issue.

 

On Sunday two farmers were killed when police fired at them protesting inadequate compensation against acquisition of land in an area bordering Aligarh and Mathura districts.

 

Land had been acquired for the 165-km long Yamuna Expressway between Noida and Agra.

 

Uttar Pradesh Government has ordered a judicial probe into the clashes and has appealed to the agitating farmers to maintain calm.

 

The government also announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to the kin of those killed in alleged police firing.

 

Meanwhile, the government transferred SSP Aligarh Vijay Prakash and District Magistrate Rama Rao. DM of Barabanki R Ravindra Naik and SP Sultanpur Satyendra Veer Singh have been appointed as the new DM and SSP respectively. (ANI)
