Bihar Drought: Nitish Kumar seeks financial aid from Manmohan Singh

New Delhi, Sat, 07 Aug 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Aug 7 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Saturday and sought financial assistance of over Rs 5000 crore from the Central Government to deal with the drought situation in his State.

After his meeting with Dr Manmohan Singh, Nitish Kumar said that the Prime Minister has assured him that a Central Team would visit Bihar soon to assess the situation.

"Bihar is facing severe drought-like situation and due to scanty rain we had to declare 28 out of 38 districts as drought affected. Remaining 10 districts have also been kept under watch. If there is no rain during August we will have to declare these districts also as drought affected," said Kumar.

"We have negative balance in State calamity relief fund. Bihar Government will need more funds to tackle the situation but that will be discussed with the Centre in second stage. Right from 2007, we have been suffering from natural calamities," he added.

Kumar further said in 2007, Bihar's 22 districts were badly hit by flood, affecting 25 million people, and in 2007, the State had to face Kosi tragedy.

"Bihar Government is tackling the situation with the resources available with it. But, the Centre should also fulfill its responsibility," he added. (ANI)
