Pakistan completely out bowled Australia in Headingley Test: Lawson

London, Sat, 24 Jul 2010 ANI

London, July 24(ANI): Former Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson has said that the Pakistan fast bowlers' ability to utilize the favourable conditions in England has played a major part in putting Pakistan on top in the second Test being played against Australia at Headingley.

Pakistan is on the verge of winning their first Test match against Australia in almost 15 years, after the pace trio of Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul bundled out the Aussies for just 88 in their first innings.

A meagre 20-run opening partnership between Simon Katich and Shane Watson was Australia's best for the innings, as they lost all 10 wickets for only 68 more runs.I have got to say that Pakistan have completely out bowled Australia in this test match. The difference in the score indicates that. The Pakistani seam bowling was outstanding and Australia couldn't quite match it," PakPassion.net quoted Lawson, as saying.

Lawson also believes that the pace attack, considered the best combination since the retirement of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, would serve the country for years to come.

"Just look at that attack of Aamer, Asif and Gul - they form a very good unit. They should get even better over time as they gain experience. Asif will have to watch his fitness as they play more - he is a great talent as long as the off field stuff is minimized," he added.

Pakistan is 40 runs short of winning the match, and levelling the two-match series.

Set a fourth-innings target of 180, Pakistan ended day three on 140-3.

Pakistan's last Test victory against Australia was in November 1995, a 74-run victory at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Since then Pakistan has lost 13 successive Tests against Australia, including the humiliating 150 run defeat in first Test at Lord's. (ANI)
