Lanka to bat first in Galle Test

New Delhi, Sun, 18 Jul 2010 ANI

New Delhi, July 18 (ANI): Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara has won the toss and elected to bat against India in the opening game of the three-match Test series at the Galle International Stadium in Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is playing his last Test match at Galle.

The 38 -year-old prolific off-spinner will retire from Test cricket after the first Test, in which he needs eight more scalps to reach the 800-wicket mark.

India will seek to end a 17-year-long series drought in Sri Lanka against the island nation with a depleted bowling attack and dodgy form of some of their top order batsmen.

The last time India won a Test series in the island nation was in 1993 under the captaincy of Mohammed Azharuddin.

Indian fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun makes his debut in international cricket in this match. (ANI)
