Chennai, July 17 (ANI): Students of Everwin Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai formed a human design of the new graphic symbol of Indian currency on Friday.
Around 2010 students of the school participated in the exercise, which was mooted by the commerce students of the school.
"We have 2010 students from sixth to twelfth standard. All the 2010 students gathered in the playground and they stood in a such a position that they form the currency symbol and every one is very happy about it because the symbol has to be popularised in quick time because it has to get international recognition and commerce students of our school made this plan and it has come out wonderful nicely," said B Purushothaman, Principal of Everwin Matriculation School, Kothalur, Chennai.
The new symbol, designed by the Bombay IIT post-graduate D Udaya Kumar, is a blend of the Devanagri 'Ra' and Roman 'R'.
"Symbol for the currency is very necessary because it will create awareness and identification of our country worldwide. So we students have created this awareness programme by making a symbol of the currency in the ground, which included about 2010 students," said Divya, a student.
The Indian rupee will now join the league of countries to have a distinct currency symbol of their own like the US dollar ($), British Pound sterling (£), Euro (?) and Japanese yen (¥).
Union cabinet on Thursday approved the adoption of the new symbol after holding a competition that drew over 3,000 entries.
The new symbol will be adopted all over the in six months, and between 18 and 24 months globally. (ANI)
