New Delhi, July 6 (ANI): The Central Government has given a week's time to the Karnataka Government to get its act together and take tough steps on the illegal miners in areas around Bellary.
Earlier on July 3, Minister of State for Environment and Forests had written a letter to State Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in which he mentioned that the continuation of mining in the region was "in complete violation of the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) resolution issued on May 10, 2010 which clearly and explicitly directed that such mining be stopped."
This is reported to be the Centre's second letter to Yeddyurappa on the issue in less than a week.
Mines Minister B K Handique had on July 1 written a letter to the Chief Minister asking him to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the entire incident.
The May 10 directives of the Forest Advisory Committee temporarily withdrew the forest clearance for three-mine owners- SB Minerals, Trident Minerals and Veeyam Minerals- as they had carried out illegal extraction activities in the Sandur forest area, according to a report in the Hindu.
It asked the Karnataka Government to probe and pursue the forest offences cases lodged against the companies and to fix responsibilities on erring officials.
The State Forest Department was asked to ensure that minerals were not transported.
The Karnataka Government was given a one-month deadline to conduct a survey and use permanent boundary pillars to demarcate the area leased for mining from the area under the forest area. (ANI)
