Mumbai, Fri, 02 Jul 2010 ANI

Mumbai,July 2(ANI): (ANI): Former BCCI chief Sharad Pawar returned to Mumbai on Friday after being elected President of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in Singapore.

Pawar took over as the seventh President of the ICC for a two-year term, becoming the second Indian after Jagmohan Dalmiya to head the world cricket governing body.

"105 countries are playing cricket and their organizations have preferred India. I think it is a great honor to India, Indian players, and cricket from India," Pawar told the media

Reacting to the controversy over the failed candidature bid of former Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, for the Vice-President's post, Pawar said the majority was not in Howard's favour.

"The majority could not support him. Ultimately in any democratic organization, proposal must be supported by the majority. Majority was not in his favour," said Pawar.

Pawar also expressed the hope that cricketing ties between India and Pakistan could be resumed soon, as the dialogue process between the two nations has recently commenced.

"If the government gives us the permission, then the cricket matches between the two nations would start again. This would also help in improving the relations also," Pawar added. (ANI)
