Islampur (West Bengal), June 22 (ANI): Activists of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Congress party clashed at Sujali village near Islampur in West Bengal in a bid to assert their influence in the area.

The violent clash took place on Monday in which rival supporters even resorted to firing at each other and the police.

Kamal Nath Mahato, a villager, said the police had failed to perform their assigned tasks in controlling the situation. The leaders of CPI-M and the Congress party supporters have been creating violence. The police haven't performed their duty and many people have been hit by bullets and they have been admitted in a hospital at Islampur," Mahato said.

However, the situation was brought under control after the police and personnel of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) fired tear gas shells to disperse the warring rivals.

Twenty people were injured in the clash and two among them were hit by bullets.

The region has been under the scanner with such incidents occurring frequently since the last civic polls. (ANI)
