Nov 28: Four-nation Lal Bahadur Shastri women’s hockey tourney kicks-off from December 1 in the capital
Haryana’s Mamta Kharab will lead the Indian women’s hockey team in the inaugural edition of the four-nation Lal Bahadur Shastri women’s hockey tournament, which will be held here from December 1 to 5.
The five-day event has been organised to create awareness and to make the game more popular between the women across the country. The women hockey has already been provided a major boost in the recent times by the Sharukh Khan starrer superhit film ‘Chak De India’.
Apart from hosts India, Italy, Azerbaijan and Malaysia are the other teams taking part in this round robin league tournament.
According to Shastri hockey tournament committee, “There was a big demand from the fans to host such a tournament after Chak De India effect.”
The tournament will be an annual event and the teams and competition would certainly increase in the coming years.
''We are hopeful that his will not only boost the game but also provide crucial exposure to Indian team before the Olympic qualifier,'' said Kamal Chaudhary, chairman organising committee.
Meanwhile Indian Women Hockey Federation (IWHF) has announced an 18-member squad for the upcoming meet.
