New Delhi, Apr 23 (ANI): Lawmakers belonging to opposition parties sought on Friday a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into alleged financial irregularities in the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament.
"The whole opposition demanded JPC into the IPL scam. The scam, which is opening everyday, and giving new information everyday," said Prakash Javadekar BJP spokesperson.
The Janata Dal (United) was more upfront in its onslaught on the government and asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to sack Farm Minister Sharad Pawar and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, whose names have cropped up in the controversy.
"The entire opposition is demanding for Joint parliamentary Committee probe and. Prior to this (investigation) he (Prime Minister) should ask Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel to resign so that an impartial probe could take place," said lawmaker and spokesperson of party Shivanand Tiwari.
The Left parties also reiterated the Opposition's stand and called on the government to conduct a holistic probe.
"We have been demanding a thorough probe ever since the IPL controversy broke out. All the aspects should be probed," said Sitaram Yechury, senior leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist).
CPI-Marxist member Basudev Acharya alleged that the Union Government was sleeping when that murky deal was going on in the country.
CPI member Gurudas Dasgupta also said the IPL was the biggest form of gambling in the history of independent India. (ANI)
