Surrey in talks with Vettori, Lara for Twenty20 call-up

Aucland/London, Apr 18(ANI): The Surrey County Club is in negotiations with New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori and former West Indies captain Brian Lara to play in the Friends Provident Twenty20 tournament, which starts in June.

Vettori's manager Greg Dyer confirmed that a contract has been finalized, but said that Surrey would get the 31-year-old's services for only about two-thirds of the games with the tournament running from June 1 to August 14.

"New Zealand play their one-day series against Sri Lanka right in the middle of it [July]. That will rule most of the Black Caps out for a period but they can look to play someone like Daniel for the start and the finish," The New Zealand Herald quoted Dyer, as saying.

"He's also had expressions of interest from other counties with figures attached, but it is up to them if they want to invest. The other thing to bear in mind is that Daniel's wife will give birth to their second baby at the end of July."

"Teams have got to be prepared to take a punt, but how they afford players and whether they break up team unity is always a risk. It's up to the CEO and the coach to decide if it's a good fit," he added.

Meanwhile, Lara, who has not played competitive cricket for two years and retired from international duty after the 2007 World Cup, has been in the nets at The Oval and has begun talks with Surrey Chief Executive Paul Sheldon and manager Chris Adams.

"We are talking to Brian about a possible future role in the club," Sheldon said.

The club already has Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds and Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla may also be available, depending on his commitments for his country. (ANI)
