Jaipur environmentalists save trees by replanting them

Jaipur, Mon, 05 Apr 2010 ANI

Jaipir, Apr 5 (ANI): Setting an example of tree conservation, environmentalists in Jaipur are replanting century old trees uprooted through a special technique, for road expansion of Jaipur-Delhi express highway.

As a part of the Jal Mahal Replantation Project, around nine huge size trees have been brought to the banks of Mansagar Lake at Jal Mahal Palace to replant them out of which five have already been planted.

According to experts the roots of the trees are given a hormonal treatment so that it can germinate.

"There are some trees which are obstructing the National Highway-8. So we are uprooting these trees from there and are replanting them in Jal Mahal. We have uprooted them in a ball like structure so that they can survive. We are also giving them a hormonal treatment, for that we are spraying hormones to the roots and mixing them with cow dung," said Jasvinder Singh, a horticulturalist.

"The task of uprooting the trees and shifting them to Jal Mahal was a challenge because of their huge size, which is why they were brought in earth moving machines and long bedded trailers," he added.

"This is a very good project, in a way it is a green drive. We brought these from Delhi road, where they were proposed to be felled, as the highway work is in progress. But when our project head came to know about this, he informed us and planned the project to save these and we brought them here," said Vishnu Sharma, Supervisor of Jal Mahal Re-plantation project.

"The main aim behind this exercise is to save as much greenery as possible, which is vanishing in the name of development," he added. (ANI)
