Wellington (New Zealand), Mar.28 (ANI): There is talk in recent weeks of Brendon McCullum giving up wicket keeping to play test cricket as a batsman only. But a more pertinent question is whether McCullum will give up playing for New Zealand to make a living from the lucrative Twenty20 circuits proliferating around the globe.
According to stuff.co.nz, sources have told the Star-Times that McCullum is seriously thinking about such an option.
New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan understands the dilemmas faced by McCullum and others and suggested that New Zealand Cricket might take a more flexible position over international commitments in the future.
"We've had some chats with Brendon, who has had a lot of cricket, and we're committed to having a chat to him this winter to get a gauge on what is the right thing to do," Vaughan was quoted, as saying.
A possible way around is to give a player such as McCullum the chance to earn plenty of money as well as continuing his international career by providing sabbaticals, such as those given by the New Zealand Rugby Union to its leading players.
McCullum is set to play for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL after the second test ends and will then play the Twenty20 World Cup.
He will miss the New Zealand tour to Sri Lanka in August because his wife, Ellissa, is to give birth to their second child in July. (ANI)
