Alonso not to rely on other drivers slipping up to win Australian Grand Prix

London, Fri, 26 Mar 2010 ANI

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Formula One ace Fernando Alonso, who won the year's first grand prix at Bahrain, has said he does not rely on other drivers slipping up to win this weekend's Australian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard is bidding for his second Melbourne victory in a row. Alonso aims to qualify at the front of the grid at Albert Park tomorrow to ensure the outcome of the race is in his own hands.

"Hopefully here in Australia we can be strong and we can fight for the win. We were lucky enough to win after Vettel's problem. Hopefully we can start in front of him and not need to wait for any problem," The Sun quoted Alonso, as saying.

Qualifying at the front will be easier said than done, however, with Vettel and team-mate Mark Webber likely to be challenging as well as both the McLarens and Mercedes drivers.

New rules banning race refuelling and limiting cars to one tyre change were blamed for turning the Bahrain GP into a boring race.

But Alonso said: "We need to be calm and wait for some races to see if the new rules have some impact. Last year in the first seven races Jenson Button won six. Was it boring? Maybe yes, maybe no."

"This is Formula One. If we want to see wet races, safety cars, all these things every race, it will not be Formula One any more.

"If people want extra show, maybe they need to reconsider if they want to watch Formula One," he added. (ANI)
