London, March 23 (ANI): The faces of Rebus creator Ian Rankin and singer Shirley Manson could now adorn the new Edinburgh trams, designed to highlight the culture of the Scottish city.
The celebs feature in a string of concept tram liveries unveiled by the city council recently.
The designs were published as project chiefs admitted more ground testing should have preceded the moving of underground pipes and cables from the tram route, which may now be finished two years late.
The council is planning special tram liveries for two of the 27-strong fleet, with another two available for commercial sponsorship.
All the others will have a similar livery to Lothian Buses' white and dark red, known as madder.
The council's city development director Dave Anderson said the city's "Inspiring Capital" logo on the front of the trams would be "as attractive as a Mercedes or VW badge",
Addressing councillors he said the trams would act as a "billboard for the city", with their "classical and elegant" liveries.
He added that one of the special liveries would showcase Edinburgh's literary tradition and World Heritage Site status, with a sample design featuring authors Ian Rankin, Muriel Spark, Walter Scott and JK Rowling.
Brand experts believe the tram liveries should be more attractive and original.
"It is important we use this opportunity to build a family of cohesive designs that embody 'brand Edinburgh' - and Scotland. I know these are just initial ideas, but I hope we can achieve a concept that delivers a look that is individual and can be 'owned' by our city," the Scotsman quoted Susanna Freedman, managing director of Edinburgh brand agency Tsuko, as saying.
She added: "Quotes by famous residents has been done many times before. The idea is certainly not original, but hopefully the execution of the design might be able make up for that. Perhaps we should be considering the words of new Scottish poets, commissioning new works or unique print designs by up-and-coming Scottish artists." (ANI)
