Bangalore, Mon, 22 Mar 2010 ANI

Bangalore, Mar 22 (ANI): A four-member Muslim delegation from United Kingdom, presently in India to study various social and educational aspects arrived here on the first leg of their tour on Sunday.

The delegation consists of people who are willing to meet different social, educational and civil society personalities to better understand the key interests and concerns of Muslims in India and share the experiences of British Muslims.

"The aim of this delegation is to show British Muslim women are happy to live in Britain, there is no conflict between their identities. In fact we have multiple identities. Myself I am British and originally from India and a woman, and I wear Hijaab and I am free to practice my faith in Britain," said Remona Aly, Campaign Director of the delegation.

The delegation will meet several members of the Muslim communities in India and share the cultural, educational and social living conditions of Muslims in both the countries. "Also our purpose is to let the Indian audiences know, both Muslims and non-Muslims, of how life is like a Muslim, to be British and Muslim, what we do and how we coexist and how the two identities fit i.e. being a British and being a Muslim work hand in hand," said Sajda Begum, a woman activist.

The delegation, sponsored by the British Council, will focus on Muslim women and work towards understanding the Indian living scenario of Muslims and the common problems they share.

The delegation comprising two men and women each will also visit New Delhi, Bhopal and Mumbai during their stay in India. (ANI)
