Sirhind (Punjab), Mar 21 (ANI): Punjab farmers are disheartened as the food grains are rotting due to the lack of proper storage facilities provided by the government.
Food stock, primarily wheat and paddy are lying in the open, simply because the Central Government has not invested in creating adequate storage.
Farmers here are feeling disheartened as they are the one, who are working hard on the fields to make Punjab, the 'Food bowl of India'.
"The flying insects are affecting wheat crop worth millions of rupees. This is also affecting the paddy grains lying nearby in the factory," said Shravan Kumar, a farmer.
"We have complained to the factory owners many a times by they haven't taken any necessary action. These grains have been lying here for the past one-year," he added.
Punjab has all these years kept the country in a comfortable position when it comes to food security.
The problem compounds when the stocked food grains are not lifted in time from the stores. While Punjab is saddled with wheat stacked for over two years, the new harvest is around the corner.
The problem is to find additional space for the upcoming harvest that is expected to flow in. Much of the stocks have already become unfit for human consumption. (ANI)
