New Delhi, March 15 (ANI): Union Minister for Law and Justice Veerappa Moily, who is also an eminent poet, writer, and thinker will be awarded the prestigious Moortidevi Award for 2007 for his outstanding work Shri Ramayan Mahanveshanam on Thursday.

President Pratibha Patil will give away the coveted award conferred by the Jnanpeeth foundation on Thursday (March 18) at 5.30 p.m in New Delhi's Vigyan Bhavan.

Moily's book Shri Ramayan Mahaniveshanam is being considered as the best Ramayana in Kannada after Kuvempu's.

Writing about Moily's book Indira Goswami, Professor in the Department of Modern Indian Languages and Literary studies, Delhi University states: " Veerappa Moily's work, namely Sri Ramayana Mahanevesham, incidently happens to be not only the first epic of the new millennium, but a great work in its own right. In fact, it is virtually a 'Lakshmanayana'. We find that the poet is totally immersed in the noble character of Lakshmana who is the guiding spirit of Veerappa Moily's Sri Ramayana Mahaneveshanam.

She says: "Reading his wonderful work, I could feel that Verappaa Moily is a reformist at heart. He has renovated some characters and episodes of the Ramayana. It is apparent that the poet whole-heartedly wants to remove corruption, crime and violence from this world. He nourishes a hope that one day he will be able to bring back the fresh sunshine of humanity to this world."

Moily, in his book, has recreated the character of Dashratha, and has made him more humane. His portrayal of Vishwamitra is also striking.

Indira Goswami says that she has no doubts that this epic will remain a distinct contribution not only to Kannada literature, but to Indian literature also.

The Moortidevi Award is considered as the most prestigious literary award in the country after the Bharatiya Jnanpith.

The objective of the Award is to foster social and individual commitment to higher values of life through the medium of literature in its larger sense.

Moily will get the 21st edition of the Moortidevi Award, while the 20th edition of the award goes to Krishna Bihari Mishra for Kalpataru ke Utsav Leela.

Moily and Mishra were earlier chosen unanimously for the honour at a meeting of the award selection board held under the chairmanship of T N Chaturvedi.

The selection committee comprised former Sahitya Akademi secretary K Satchidanandan, Jnanpith awardee Sanskrit scholar Satyavarat Shastri, former Moortidevi Award winning Oriya writer Pratibha Ray, eminent linguist Vrishabha Prasad Jain, Sahu Akhilesh Jain and Ravindra Kalia.

The Hindi version of Moily's book has been brought out by Rajkamal Prakashan Pvt Ltd, and is translated from Kannada by Pradhan Gurudatta. (ANI)
