Chittagong, Sun, 14 Mar 2010 ANI

Chittagong, Mar 14(ANI): England have put themselves in a winning position after declining to enforce the follow-on on day three of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong.

England spinner Graeme Swann picked up another five-wicket haul of his career to bowl out Bangladesh for 296.

Having not enforced the follow on, England raced to 131-5 at stumps, a massive lead of 434 with two days remaining in the Test.

Earlier in the day, with Bangladesh resuming on 154-5, the tourists started perfectly, as Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal added just five to his overnight 81 before being bowled by Tim Bresnan, The Telegraph reports. angladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim (79) and Naeem Islam showed considerable ability by adding on 113 for the eighth wicket and holding off the English bowlers throughout much of the morning and afternoon sessions.

A needless run out broke the deadlock, Naeem the victim of miscommunication in the middle and smart work from Michael Carberry in the field.

As soon as the partnership was broken on 296, Swann picked up the last two wickets without a run being added.

England's batsmen tried to score some quick runs in their second innings, but were tangled up by Bangladeshi spinners, who took wickets at regular intervals.

Openers skipper Alistair Cook (39) and Michael Carberry (34) added a quickfire 65 in 15.4 overs before, the captain lofted a ball to give a easy catch in the deep.

Kevin Pietersen then produced some blistering shots for a 24-ball 32, before one mow too many saw him trapped lbw by Shakib Al Hasan.

Spinner Abdur Razzak later dismissed Carberry and Paul Collingwood.
