London, Mar 8 (ANI): Sir Cliff Richard believes the soccer World Cup, to be held in South Africa this year, will give hope to the street children in the country.
The singer met a teenage orphan and gave him singing tips, during his visit to the Umthombo shelter in Durban city center.
He talked to 17-year-old Faith Mabuza, at the British-run refuge for street children who have been sexually abused, beaten or orphaned.
"The World Cup should give these kids a chance of a brighter future and empower more people to help them through projects like this," the Daily Express quoted him as saying.
He added: "It's devastating to think of what these kids have faced and amazing to see them still smiling. When you see the beaming faces and hear them sing, play or dance, you see they have warm hearts.
"Street children get written off but Umthombo is living proof that they deserve a chance."
Richard, who has supported Umthombo for numerous years, added: If people open their eyes to projects like this, they can help make a difference."
Meanwhile, teenager Mabuza expressed his joy at getting the chance to interact with the music legend.
He said: "It's a big day for me to meet a big star like Cliff Richard. He clapped when I sang for him and he was dancing to the beat. Then he told me what to do to practise and said never give up. For me to hug Cliff is like having another father." (ANI)
