Moily welcomes Women's Reservation Bill

New Delhi, Sun, 07 Mar 2010 ANI

New Delhi, Mar 7 (ANI): Union Law and Justice Minister Veerappa Moily has hailed the Women's Reservation Bill, to be endorsed by Parliament on Monday.

Talking to reporters here on the sidelines of a conference, Moily said: "This has been pending since very long time. Lot of national consultations have gone in and a consensus has emerged, irrespective of the political parties. After all, the country needs such legislations."

"These legislations have been there in many places. With all our best of intentions, the political parties, they could not evolve the system where the adequate representation would be made available for the women. We were all expecting that to happen but it did not happen. Then ultimately there is no other remedy, no other alternative, but for going in for this kind of a constitutional amendment for 33 percent representation to the women," he added.

With BJP claiming credit for initiating the proposal of the Bill at its convention in Baroda, Moily answered back saying 'there is no partition in the credit'.

"People of this country, particularly the women and the Parliament will take the credit. There is no partition in this credit," added Moily.

Women across India have been lobbying intensely for the enactment of the Bill.

This Bill had been stalled for over a decade due to a sharp difference of opinion among political parties. (ANI)
