Ferguson 'supporting bid to buy Manchester United': City financiers

London, Sun, 07 Mar 2010 ANI

London, Mar 7(ANI): Senior City financiers allied to the wealthy consortium planning a takeover of Manchester United claim that the club's manager Sir Alex Ferguson is supporting the controversial bid.

According to reports, Ferguson would be prepared to invest his own money in the club if the bid by the group known as the "Red Knights" were to succeed.

"Alex Ferguson is not only supportive of the bid, but would be prepared, if successful, to back it," The Guardian quoted a source, as saying.

Another senior City figure said: "We all know we have his support, that he likes the people involved, but we can't embarrass him."

However, Ferguson has denied that he was supporting the buyout in any way, and said: "It's absolute rubbish. Not an ounce of truth in it."

Any sign of Ferguson's support would galvanise the takeover bid which could see United being sold for as much as 1.2 billion pounds even though the Glazer family consistently say the club is not for sale.

The latest figures show that the Glazer family has debts of 716 million pounds. (ANI)
