Stephanie Rice says she won't risk her life for Delhi C'wealth Games gold

Melbourne, Mon, 01 Mar 2010 ANI

Melbourne, Mar 01 (ANI): Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice has said she would have to rethink about going to India for the Commonwealth Games, if there was "any serious or credible risk."

The Olympic gold medallist said she would consider the security measures for athletes in Delhi, before she decides to take her flight to the subcontinent.

"It's something that I have to give serious consideration to," News.com.au quoted her as telling the Herald Sun.

She added: "And if there is any serious or credible risk, then that will prompt a rethink. I just want to see what transpires in coming months.

"I have the utmost confidence in Swimming Australia and Games officials to make the best decisions on the welfare and safety of athletes."

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said no credible threat existed despite a militant group's warning last month not to send athletes.

He said: "It is a most regrettable fact of modern life that at any major sporting event . . . there is a threat of terrorist or other attack and we have to be absolutely vigilant.

"The conclusion we've come to . . . is we don't regard that threat as a credible threat.

"It's a matter for individual athletes or sporting bodies to decide whether they take part or not."

Smith has left for a three-day Games-related visit to India. (ANI)
