Kabul attack defines risk faced by Indian medical fraternity: Prime Minister

New Delhi, Feb 27 (ANI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said that the Friday's Kabul suicide attack defined the risks Indian medical fraternity have to face while serving in country like Afghanistan.

 

Addressing the Combined Annual Meeting of The Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and Indian Association of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons (CTCOMCON), 2010 here Singh said: As I stand before you, my thought goes to those members of the Indian Medical Mission in Kabul in Afghanistan, who while serving the people of Afghanistan, particularly the women and children who used to visit Indira Gandhi Hospital in Kabul, perished due to the terror attack yesterday."

 

This is a measure of the uncertainty that India's Medical Mission has to work under. And that defines all the risks our medical team has been facing while devotedly serving the people of Afghanistan, he added.

 

Singh said the attack displayed the pressure and risk Indian medicos face while serving the trouble hit areas and reconstruction work.

 

"It is a measure of the commitment to relief of human suffering that the medical fraternity is known for all over the world," he said.

 

On Friday, targeting Indians yet again, the Taliban carried out coordinated suicide attacks at two hotels in Kabul killing up to nine Indians, including two Major-rank Army officers, evoking a sharp reaction from India.

 

At least 10 others, including five Indian Army officers, were injured in the strike that killed 8 others, including locals and nationals from other countries.

 

The bombers, believed to be three in number, struck at the guest houses, particularly at Park Residence, rented out by the Indian embassy for its staffers and those linked to India's evelopmental work in Afghanistan. (ANI)
