Customs officials seize 20 kilograms of heroin

Amritsar, Feb 21 (ANI): Customs officials confiscated approximately 20 kilograms of heroin worth around rupees one billion in the international market from a drug runner at Amritsar.

 

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has termed this as one of the biggest ever drug seizures in India.

 

The contraband substance was being transported in a mini- truck and when it was challenged at a village named Heir near the Raja Sansi International Airport on the outskirts of the city, the driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped.

 

P L Bindra, a senior official of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Amritsar Range said, "Approximately packets or 20 kilograms of heroin have been seized at the village Heir from a vehicle."

 

"The driver left his vehicle and ran away. The vehicle has also been taken into custody," added Bindra.

 

Punjab border with Pakistan is notorious for smuggling illegal drugs, fake Indian currency and weapons.

 

Last year the BSF seized around 47.7 kilograms of heroin and fake Indian currency worth over Rupees three million on the Punjab border, besides nabbing four Pakistan-based smugglers. (ANI)
