Facebook to launch 'Zero' version for mobile phones

London, Wed, 17 Feb 2010 ANI

London, February 17 (ANI): Facebook has announced the creation of its new site "Zero", a low-bandwidth and text-only version for mobile phone users.

The world's biggest social network revealed details about the new site at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The company said the site, which "omits data intensive applications like photos", would be launched soon, The BBC reported.

Analysts at CCS Insight revealed Facebook Zero could help operators free-up significant bandwidth on their networks.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "We are discussing it... as an option to make Facebook on the mobile web available to everyone, anywhere and allow operators to encourage more mobile internet usage." (ANI)
