Nov 14: Tamil Nadu farmer marries a female dog
In twenty first century where world is governed by the reason and science, when India rides high in the field of information and technology which has changed the world and made her mark in the field of space and nuclear technology, there is certain section of population which defies the current trends of the world and still keep firm faith in superstitions and follow the pundits to solve their problems or to cure their physical disorders.
Undoubtedly the reference is to a farmer from Sivaganga district from Tamil Nadu who got married to a female dog following a belief that he is suffering from a curse which he had since he killed two dogs in his field.
Selvakumar, a farmer believed that bad luck is following him for the last fifteen years when he killed two mating dogs. So he got a four-year-old bitch and married to it with full-fledged Hindu customs and traditions, ceremonies performed by a Hindu priest. The bitch was decorated with ‘Saari’ and garland. All the guests and family members along with bride and her groom had a feast after the marriage.
He was advised so by an astrologer that he is dogged by the spirits of the killed dogs and can be relieved only when he gets married to a dog and live with it. He consulted astrologer after he was allegedly left helpless by the doctors, as they could not identify his problem when a few days back he lost his speech and hearing capacity.
The incident is not something new to ears and eyes. Such news keep coming especially local newspapers often report such incidents. At first it creates giggle and then evokes serious questions in mind where are we heading towards? Have we come to the point of exhaustion of our reasoning faculties or are they still in their amateur condition. I leave it on the readers to decide whether it is the lack of education, enlightenment or our reluctance to use our reason. Suddenly some terms as vision 2020, India of my dreams come to mind and seem to laugh at us?
There could not have been a better solution of taking care of a stray dog instead of arranging a token marriage with the dog?
