London, Feb 1 (ANI): A new research suggests that the trend of British families watching TV together is fast becoming a thing of the past.
There was a time when 15 million audiences sat before the telly to watch their favourite shows.
But now a mere 37percent of viewing is done in family groups, slipping by 17percent from a decade ago.
According to the research by Gothenburg University in Sweden, the growth in channels and availability of cheap TV sets means more people than ever now watch TV alone. Personal computers are also wearing down the "social glue" of communal viewing.
The study also discovered that Pay TV is changing viewing behaviour, making it difficult for people to discuss programmes at work.
"We're becoming more individualistic, we can no longer talk about TV as social glue. What used to unite people now divides them," the Daily Express quoted the study's author Jakob Bjur of the university's Department of Journalism, as saying. (ANI)
