London, Jan 28 (ANI): London theatres have earned a huge revenue of over half a billion pounds for the first time in 2009.
Despite the recession, people turned up in record numbers to attend plays, musicals and opera last year.
The Society of London Theatre said that the box office earning at London theatres were up by more than 7.5 percent than the year before.
Nica Burns, president of the society, welcomed the results.
"Britain's artistic community continues to create exceptional work," Sky News quoted her as saying.
"The extraordinary quality and breadth of productions available nightly in London explains these record figures in such a difficult year economically.
"Whilst our musicals continue to flourish, 2009 was an outstanding year for plays - proving that audiences respond to challenge and stimulation as well as toe-tapping entertainment," she added.
Last year was the seventh consecutive year in a row that new attendance and revenue records have been set. (ANI)
