Malaysian budget airliner Air Asia to target two million passengers to India

Kuala Lumpur, jan.28 (ANI): Malaysian budget airliner Air Asia, which will soon start services to five other Indian cities, has targeted two million passengers to India by next year, said group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes.

 

"We are proud to position Kuala Lumpur as the gateway to India, and at the same time, it is India's gateway to Asean," the New Strait Times quoted Fernandes, as saying after the launch of the new routes by Transport Minister Seri Ong Tee Keat here on Tuesday.

 

The airline will start daily flights to New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai in the second and third quarters of this year.

 

It will fly from Penang to Chennai beginning on April 28, while flights from the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal to Chennai will start on May 17, to Bangalore on May 20, to Hyderabad on July 20, to Mumbai on May 6 and to New Delhi on August 4.

 

This is in addition to its current services to Tiruchirapplalli (Trichy), Kolkata, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum).

 

The flights to the four cities have received overwhelming response, with average loads of 80 per cent.

 

To mark the launch of the new routes, the airline is offering all-in fares from as low as RM199 for the booking period from now until Jan 31, for travel between April 28 and Oct 30 this year.

 

Ong said with the new routes, AirAsia and its long-haul sister carrier, AirAsia X, would be able to leverage on India's fast economic growth. (ANI)
