Saran for adaptive measures to meet consequences of global warming

New Delhi, Jan 21 (NAI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Special Envoy for Climate Change, Shyam Saran, has said there is a need for introduction of adaptive measures to deal with the consequence of global warming.

Interacting with delegates of the India Energy Forum during a session, called 'Beyond Copenhagen - Road Map for India', here on Wednesday, Saran spoke insisted on corrective action and prophesied that the world known to all might even cease to exist if no any action is taken.

Referring to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, an agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Saran pointed out several failed promises made during the talks, one of which involved giving financial aid to developing countries to do their bit in curbing emissions and slowing down the climate change process.

"It was also agreed that there would be a system put in place for both the financial as well as technologies, to enable developing countries to engage in climate change action, both in terms of adapting to climate change, which has already taken place, or likely to take place, as well as the mitigations," he added.

Acknowledging that the situation could not be reversed in a short span of time, he said developed nations should take the initiative to cut emission of greenhouse gases harming the environment.

Terming global warming as a serious threat to humanity, Saran said his analyses revealed that if the developed countries refused to cut down their emissions to 25-40 percent, global climate would be adversely affected. (ANI)
