Perth Test 'mid-pitch physical altercation' was waiting to happen: Roebuck

Sydney, Fri, 18 Dec 2009 ANI

Sydney, Dec 18(ANI): Noted cricket columnist Peter Roebuck has said that the mid-pitch physical altercation between Australian batsmen Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson and West Indies spinner Sulieman Benn on the second day of Perth Test was an incident waiting to happen.

"All things considered, Perth was an incident waiting to happen. No sooner had play resumed after lunch than the pot boiled over," Roebuck writes in a syndicated column for the Sydney Morning Herald.

He highlighted his statement by pointing out the temperament of the three players involved in the incident.

Roebuck was specifically critical about Haddin's disposition, and said: "Haddin is a different kettle of fish. His chances of serving as a peacekeeper for the United Nations appear remote. By disposition, he is belligerent. Once a fight starts, he is more likely to join in than to break it up."

"As much was obvious as he became embroiled in an exchange yesterday with Sulieman Benn that is bound to have wider ramifications. From the start of his innings, Haddin brandished his bat in the manner of a man determined to take the fight into the enemy. It is in his nature to take things personally, and the injury suffered by his captain might have been stirred him," he added.

Roebuck further said that Benn was equally responsible for the squabble and said: "Benn, no lilting lily himself, had been chirping away in his incessant manner. A fine line exists between teasing and taunting. From a distance, it is impossible to say on which side his remarks fall. Truth to tell, he is a spinner in a fast bowler's body, a conflict that has caused trouble before now." (ANI)
